Here are a few reminders about program logistics:

  • Make sure to sign your child IN and OUT each day with her/his counselor.
  • Pack plenty of drinking water and backpacks should have shoulder pads and not be too large (your child will be carrying them most of the time).
  • Pack multiple snacks and please, limit sugar.
  • Apply sun-block before leaving home, and we will re-apply during the session, if necessary.
  • Hats are great.
  • Your child will definitely come home wet and dirty. If you have somewhere to go right after camp, consider bringing a change of clothes and a towel for the car ride home.

Wilderness Youth Project School Year Programs

Our school year program have something for children age 3 to 17: Chickadees, Grasshoppers, Young Eagles, Peacemaker's Journey, Homeschool, and North Wind Leadership, School-based programs (Adams, McKinley & Crane), and programs in Montecito and Ojai. Our school year programs are organized by Sessions (Fall, Winter, Spring) and by Stages (Chickadees, Grasshoppers, Young Eagles, Peace Maker’s Journey and North Wind Leaders).  We meet one day a week. Each week, our various programs (with the exception of Chickadees and Ojai) travel to different wild places around Santa Barbara, in 15 passenger vans.  For example, we visit local creeks, beaches, rivers and open spaces.

Stage 1: Chickadees

Chickadees

Child holding baby racoon
Our Chickadees program is designed for our youngest wanderers, ages 3-5. The program has 9 participants and 3-4 adults. This low child to adult ratio allows us to explore the creeks, trails and meadows of Tucker’s Grove Park with the careful attention needed to keep children safe and happy.

We meet at the entrance of the Kiwani’s Meadow at Tucker’s Grove Park (turn right at park entrance and go all the way to the end of the road).  The day usually starts with a walk up to the “Chickadees Meadow” and then a gathering for snacks and an opening circle.

Daily activities vary depending on the weather, season and the energy of the group.  We give ample time for child-centered exploration of the meadow, creeks and trails of Tucker’s Grove Park.  Mentors focus on activities that encourage joyful play, meaningful work, team building and harvesting stories that build language skills. Parents are welcome to tag along on the first day only. Tell me more about the program!

Stage 2: Grasshoppers

Grasshoppers

Grades K-2

This is a new stage of after-school programming, designed for our young adventurers who are starting school. Grasshoppers, in its literal sense, couldn’t be more aptly named. Still rooted firmly in the close proximity of home and family that governs early childhood, these children are bursting with enthusiasm and the desire to judiciously extend their boundaries. As recognition of this, grasshoppers explore the places of wild character around Santa Barbara with the assistance of a 15 passenger van. This allows them access to such varying environments as beaches, rivers, canyons and meadows. Great emphasis is placed on developing exploratory judgement, self-care and care for the group. Many games pose opportunities for participants to take on the form of animals or hide quietly, both of which encourage the developing empathy with the natural world.

There is usually a free exploratory time with a few games or, “Items of intrigue,” as everyone is arriving. Next the group has an opening circle, then departs to a location of the day. The group returns to the park at 5:30 or 6 pm, depending on daylight savings.

Stage 3: Young Eagles
Young Eagles Grades 3-5

Young Eagles is our gateway program that has the primary focus of introducing youth to nature in a way that encourages children to build meaningful relationships with the natural world. Young Eagles allows children's passions and curiosity to guide our activities.  Our mentoring philosophy uses core routines such as sensory awareness games, child-centered wandering, and focused crafts that inspire our connection with nature and lay the foundation of a Peacemaker. Through the course of a season children grow in agility, confidence, self awareness, and social skills.

Each week we wander different creeks, beaches and mountains of Santa Barbara to discover all things that thrive here. We look under rocks, hide among the ferns and climb the mighty oaks. We learn how to sneak up on gophers and recognize common tracks in the mud. Come play with us!

Crane

Grades 1-6, Pick up and drop off at school site.

We're pleased to offer a Young Eagles program specifically designed for Crane Country Day School. [We are proud to be offering specialized programs at Adams & McKinley Elementary Schools in Santa Barbara, but these are not open to enrollment as part of our afterschool programs. Rather, we work directly with classrooms and teachers to place children into these programs.]

Young Eagles for Homeschool
Ages 6-12, Goleta
Boy looking through tree

Our homeschool program grew out of requests from the community for us to offer our nature-based mentoring to homeschoolers. The curriculum and daily activities are equal to those we offer as part of Young Eagles, except they take place on Mondays during the day.  The program's primary focus is to introduce youth to nature in a way that encourages children to build meaningful relationships with the natural world. Through the course of a season children grow in agility, confidence, self awareness, and social skills. Goleta group meets at Tucker's Grove Park.

Stage 4: Peace Maker's Journey
Peacemaker's Journey Peacemaker's Journey, Grades 6-8
Our fourth stage program, Peace Maker’s Journey (PMJ), is offered to children grades 6-8.  The intention of PMJ is to support kids in expanding their social, ecological, and self awareness. Emphasis is placed on peer group interactions and opportunities to exert independence and leadership in order to further social skills and begin to identify one’s own gifts. The Peacemaker Principles of Peace, Unity and the Good Message are intended to help guide this process of growth. Our days together will include exploration through wandering, team building games, sit spot, naturalist skills and more.
Stage 5: North Wind Leadership
Northwind Leadership
Grades 9-12

The intention of North Wind Leadership (NWL) is to cultivate teens who are equally comfortable and competent both in their communities and in the natural world.  We move toward this goal through community service, an ever deepening knowledge of place, and wilderness survival skills.  Teens in this program will develop a solid awareness of their individual gifts and will be well equipped to carry these gifts forward.  NWL meets weekly and teens are also invited to participate in a series of weekend adventures where they learn essential survival skills such as fire by friction, building natural shelters, way finding and much more.
