What happens when learning moves beyond the classroom?

When students from Santa Barbara Junior High take learning beyond school grounds to Lizard’s Mouth, Rincon Beach, and Skofield Park, curiosity deepens, confidence grows, and connection takes root.

Join us for a special community luncheon featuring PJ Carmean, Santa Barbara Jr. High Teacher, as she shares moving, firsthand stories of taking her students beyond the classroom and into the natural world through their partnership with Wilderness Youth Project.

PJ will reflect on her own journey as an educator and the powerful growth she’s witnessed as her students spend the year building language skills, confidence, and a deep sense of belonging. Her stories highlight how outdoor experiences can be especially transformative for emergent multilingual learners.

Enjoy lunch, inspiring storytelling, and meaningful conversation with WYP staff, board members, and fellow community members who believe in expanding access to life-changing outdoor experiences for youth.
