To our Wilderness Youth Project Community,

Awareness is at the core of nature connection. Usually we write to you with inspiration to deepen nature awareness. As a predominantly white- led  organization, we write to you today with a different awareness: awareness of our privilege, of the structures of institutionalized racism and anti-blackness, of the ways the nature connection and environmental movements have internalized racism and of the limits and barriers to access to nature for Black people, Indigenous people, and other People of Color.  

Over the past week we have grieved the deaths of George Floyd and too many before him. Wilderness Youth Project knows that our place in this movement is to stand in solidarity with people of color who are working to make more just and equitable communities. We will keep striving to be an anti-racist organization. We recognize that until people of color are safe in our communities, there cannot be equitable access to the benefits of nature. Our voices are not the most important ones, but our vocal solidarity is essential.

En Español:

La conciencia está en el centro de la conexión con la naturaleza. Normalmente le escribimos con la inspiración de profundizar la conciencia de la naturaleza. Como una organización predominantemente dirigida por gente blanca, le escribimos hoy con conciencia: conciencia de nuestro privilegio, de las estructuras del racismo institucionalizado y de anti negritud, de las formas en que la conexión con la naturaleza y los movimientos ambientalistas han internalizado el racismo y de los límites y barreras al acceso a la naturaleza para la gente negra, la gente indígena y otras personas de color.  

En la última semana hemos contristado la muerte de George Floyd y de demasiados antes que él. Wilderness Youth Project sabe que nuestro lugar en este movimiento es ser solidarios con la gente de color que trabaja para hacer comunidades más justas y equitativas. Seguiremos esforzándonos por ser una organización antirracista. Reconocemos que hasta que la gente de color esté segura en nuestras comunidades, no puede haber un acceso equitativo a los beneficios de la naturaleza. Nuestras voces no son las más importantes, pero nuestra solidaridad vocal es esencial.
