25 Years of Nature Connection: A Look Back at WYP in 2024

Want to know one thing just about everyone agrees on?
Nature is good for you.

Not just for you or me, but for all of us. Kids, adults, and everyone in between. Time in nature makes us smarter, healthier, happier, and more connected… not just to the earth, but to each other. And when we feel that connection, we’re more likely to care for our neighbors and this magnificent place we all call home.

That’s been the heart of Wilderness Youth Project (WYP) since the beginning in 1999. And in 2024, we celebrated a major milestone: our 25th anniversary.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 25 years since a small group of kids living at Transition House began exploring the natural world with the help of dedicated volunteer mentors.

Back then, “nature connection” wasn’t a household phrase. Richard Louv hadn’t yet written Last Child in the Woods. The term “Nature Deficit Disorder” didn’t exist.

But you, our supporters, volunteers, parents, and educators… you already knew.

You felt the difference.

Grandparents knew.

They remembered what it felt like to grow up outside, and they saw the same spark of joy return to their grandkids.

“After a week of summer camp, I asked my granddaughter, “Which was the best day?” she instantly replied "All of them."

Teachers knew.

We remember when teachers would ask,

“What did you do with these kids? They’re so much more engaged in learning!”

We think of Kathy Abney, then Principal at La Cuesta High School, who nominated WYP as an exemplary program. Her hope? That more high schoolers could experience what happens when education meets the outdoors.

Parents knew.

They saw it firsthand:

“I’ve tried every program and camp out there. Before WYP, nothing worked. My child was struggling. Now, they’re thriving.”

These stories, and so many more, are why we do what we do. And this year, in honor of 25 years of getting kids outside, we’re sharing a snapshot of what your support has made possible.
